Submissions for this year’s Jhalak Prize are now closed. Thank you to everyone who put forward nominations.

Details of the longlist can be found here. The shortlist will be published on 6 February 2017, and the winner will be announced at the next Bare Lit Festival.

This prize is open to all UK residents who are a person of colour.

The 2017 prize is open to any book written in English and published in the UK between 1 Jan and 31 Dec 2016 with one important exception: books first published in another country of origin will NOT be considered.

The prize exists to support UK-based authors, publishers and agents of colour, so the book must originate in the UK and not have been published anywhere else in the world before its UK publication date. Books published simultaneously elsewhere will be considered if the author and primary agent are UK-based.

There’s no age limit, the authors don’t have to be British, and they can have published other books before. Non-British/Irish authors who do not live in the UK or Ireland are excluded.

We are accepting any book by a person of colour. This includes poetry, short story, non-fiction, fiction (not limited by genre), childrens, teen and YA. We also accept submissions from self-published authors. The only stipulation is that the book is available for sale in the UK.

Any queries should be sent to nikesh@mediadiversified.org

Please read the details below carefully and contact us before submitting your book(s) for the addresses and shipping details.

There is no submission fee for the Jhalak Prize.

Please note the following: The closing date for the Jhalak Prize is midnight (GMT), 15th December 2016. There are no exceptions. For books published between 15th December 2016 and 31 December 2016, we are happy to accept advance or proof copies, or to receive them after the deadline by prior arrangement.

If you wish to submit books to this year’s prize, please email nikesh@mediadiversified.org for details on where to send books.
