The Media Diversified Library
Media Diversified was founded in July 2013, it’s aim to diversify the UK’s media landscape and provide challenging and new content which advances the discourse around race, politics, identity, economics and popular culture.
Since then we have published articles such as “You can’t do that! Stories have to be about White people”, Writing and Reading While Black. Lessons learned, Book list for black girls: promoting self-love and empowering young black women, Why we need mirrors in literature, and ‘Her nose was straight with a soft tip at the end’ — Writing Race at School
All underline the need for us to critically engage from a young age with literature. Who writes it, accounts for the content, who publishes it accounts for who is allowed to write it.
On the 26th of March 2016, author Nikesh Shukla took on the challenge of naming 200+ books by writers of colour on Twitter, in an effort to promote the visibility of writers of colour. As a platform dedicated to this aim, we teamed up with Anand Madhvani and Sabeena Akhtar to collate that list and present the Media Diversified Library.
