We are looking for board members! The board will be composed of multiple strategy groups covering all Media Diversified operations (see diagram below). As a member of the board you will be responsible for making sure that we achieve our aims and ambitions while also maintaining our core values.

Media Diversified is a non-profit independent publishing platform, campaign group and advocacy organisation that aims to advance the discourse around race, identity, politics and popular culture.

We give writers and  authors from marginalised backgrounds the platform and visibility they deserve.

We publish articles by writers that present fresh perspectives and insightful commentary on contemporary social and political issues — from pop culture to business, international conflict to personal identity, gender, history and more.

We have been featured on BBC Radio, the New York Times, Al-Jazeera English, the New Statesman and Grazia and linked to by the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Independent, Vanity Fair and CNN amongst others.

Content has been shared by Malorie Blackman, Gary Younge, Neil Gaiman, Caitlin Moran the Royal Shakespeare Company and more.

Our campaigning focuses on challenging misrepresentations of people of colour in government and the media in order to affirm their rights to equity and social justice.

Our advocacy centres on our Experts Directory and Speakers Bureau, which furnishes media outlets and corporations with a unique database of experts from a wide variety of professional fields, addressing the structural erasure of experts of colour from the mainstream media and public speakers network.

Our Aims

In today’s media landscape, writers from marginalised backgrounds are seldom valued as much as they should be. Media Diversified counteracts the trend of equating literary and journalistic merit with whiteness by highlighting the amazing variety of work currently being produced by marginalised writers.

Our staff seeks to cultivate talented writers for our platform and to equip them with the skills needed to engage with media outlets as a whole. Our digital multimedia platform publishes articles daily on breaking news, current affairs, politics, society, media, and arts and culture. We are very active on social media, with accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Many of our articles and fundraising campaigns, plus advertising campaigns are shared on all three platforms, with Twitter being the primary platform for this engagement.

Testimonials

We are excited to be relaunching the Media Diversified Experts Directory later this year! It will now also act as a Speakers Bureau. It’s a resource for media outlets and companies that challenges the ‘pale, male and stale’ mindset of mainstream media.

The Directory is a database of experts based around the world (but mostly the UK and US) in a wide variety of professional fields, qualified to provide expert commentary on today’s issues. It’s geared toward corporate and media clients, with experts available for consultancy, training and talks. The directory also connects clients with people from marginalised backgrounds who are experts in their fields and sets up opportunities to create key long-term networks that foreground voices of colour.

“We had a really good experience of working with Media Diversified to find guests and audience members for the pilot shows for the new Victoria Derbyshire programme on BBC Two/BBC News Channel. The people who took part in our programmes were excellent speakers and engaged in informative and interesting TV studio debates on a wide range of topics. We are keen to continue to work with Media Diversified in the future once we start broadcasting in April 2015 to bring lots of new people and voices to BBC TV.”

Monica Soriano, Senior Producer, Victoria Derbyshire programme, BBC News

“News channels have become increasingly aware of the importance of hearing from a diverse range of contributors. There have been visible improvements in getting more women onto news programmes, but more work needs to be done to cover other types of diversity. Having a directory of experts is a valuable tool in alerting producers to a wider pool of contributors.”

Tami Hoffman, Sky News, Interviews Editor
