Some local cultural practices (such as wearing a headscarf) have become linked, in the popular mind, to the articles of faith of Islam. Has the world’s general idea of the Islamic faith focused too much on tradition, and not enough on core beliefs?

  1. The way Islam is practiced today is far away from the way it was practiced in time of prophet Muhammad

  2. Traditions and norm have been interpreted through the Quran and the law of Sharia through different viewpoints for hundreds of year

  3. Eventually Islam has passed on with a different informative perception through globalization and secularism

  4. – the two biggest influences on why Islam is practised so wrong in so many ways today.
  5. People believe what they read about Islam in mainstream media like the our 21st century government is aware of what Islam really is about

  6. Mehdi Hasan | Islam Is A Peaceful Religion | Oxford Union
  7. Misinterpretation number 1:
  8. In the Quran, torture and mutilation are sins. Yet women all over the Middle East get abused due to non-traditional dress.
  9. But I for one don’t remember anywhere in the Quran telling me it’s okay to hurt another human being because their ankles are out
  10. Most of the ill-treatment that women receive in the Muslim world is based on local culture and traditions, without any basis in the faith.
  11. Practices such as forced marriage, abuse, and restricted movement contradict Islamic law governing family behaviour and personal freedom.
  12. If we look into the first revelation of Islam, it is not biased and gendered. According to the archives, many leaders etc. were women.
  13. Although the first word did not specify and focus towards a particular gender, society has made it gendered.

  14. The Quran addresses human beings as ”you”, covering both sexes.
  15. Misinterpretation number 2:
  16. If you ask anyone why Muslims don’t eat pork they’ll reply with the standard ”It’s dirty” ”you are what you eat”

  17. Some Imams say that those who eat pig lose all jealousy and let their wives sleep around without minding being cheated on at all.

  18. Actually, back in the days of the prophet, pork was banned from being eaten due to sun and heat rotting pig meat, making it fatal to eat.

  19. Misinterpretation number 3:
  20. Terrorism cannot be justified under any valid interpretation of the Islamic faith.

  21. The entire Qur’an, taken as a complete text, gives a message of hope, faith, and peace to a faith community of one billion people.
  22. The overwhelming message is that peace is to be found through faith in God, and justice among fellow human beings.

  23. Some scholars do speak out against terrorism in all its forms, and offer explanations of misinterpreted or twisted teachings.
  24. A friend of mine recently told me that Muslims hate all other religions. Meaning half my family hate me, great.
  25. In actual fact, Throughout the Qur’an, Muslims are reminded that they are not the only ones who worship God.
  26. Jews and Christians are called “People of the Book,” and have received previous revelations from the One Almighty God that we all worship.
  27. The Qur’an also says to protect from harm not only mosques, but monasteries, synagogues, and churches – because “God is worshipped therein.”

  28. Was all this hating other religions thing taking its toll on you too? So glad I can be a civil human being like the Quran asked me to now.
  29. Muslims have long been subject to negative stereotyping being presented as terrorists, uncivilized, barbaric, exotic peoples and oppressive

  30. This portrayal of Islam and Muslims is perpetuated by many sectors of the mainstream media as well as public educational institutions.

In my opinion, Muslims and non-Muslims alike need to educate themselves before they run around with banners making the rest of us look bad. What do you think?

  1. Reblogged this on CHAPTER 19. and commented:
I have taken the time to research the Qur’an and talk to my Muslim peers about Islam – granted, in my time I have known few Muslims, but I, awkwardly, too it upon myself to discuss Islam with them and learnt plenty. I still believe that the issue is in the extremists, not in the religion itself and that this is an issue across all faiths, and is not restricted to Muslims only, despite, of course, what some like to think. Western culture has an irrational fear of Muslims, and that is solely based on the MSM’s and government’s portrayal of Muslims. I mean for all we know they are in fact “evil terrorists”, after all that is what we are shown constantly, but I guess we’re too lazy to read and school ourselves… Let me be naive and believe in the good of people, the world has not destroyed my soul yet, not quite anyhow.

P.s I realise Twitter isn’t exactly “valid”, but if you research, you’ll realise these comments are legitimate.
